Cultural Day Celebration Friday, April 12, 2013!

The Afterschool Program's Children and Families come to together to celebrate Culture Day! The event will take place at TCYF Tobin Community Center located on 1481 Tremont St  Roxbury Crossing, MA 02120 from 5:30PM-7:30PM.
The night will consist of live performances, food, a special presentation from the the BCYF TCC Afterschool students, and also a raffle! All are welcome to join!
 BCYF offers a range of affordable programs including preschool, school-aged & adult education, family literacy, youth employment, violence prevention & intervention, senior activities, recreation and enrichment. BCYF’s 35 facilities are located throughout Boston. Check out for more information. 

City At Your Service Event Held on Wednesday, April 10, 2013!

On Wednesday, April 10, 2013 from 6:30PM-8:30PM at the Mildred Avenue Community Center located on 5 Mildred Avenue Mattapan, MA, the City at your Service event will be held. This event will give residents in the community the opportunity to know what resources are available to them as Boston residents as well as give them the opportunity to meet departments in the Mayor's Office of Human Resources.  
Many departments will be there to share additional information about programs available. Some of these departments include: Boston Centers for Youth & Families, Boston Youth Fund, Office of Civil Rights, Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Commission on Affairs of the Elderly, Mayor's Youth Council/ Youth Line, Department of Veterans' Services, and Women's Commission. Come out and learn about more beneficial programs!

Mattapan United:Call For Champions

What is Mattapan United? Mattapan United (MU) is a community-driven initiative aimed at improving the quality of lige for Mattapan residents. The initiative brings together residents alongside educational and civic leaders, business owners, nonprofit organizations, and local and State officials to collaborate on development and implementation of a Community Contract that aims to build a stronger, safer, healthier, and more vibrant Mattapan. Community Residents Gather Together For B3 Meeting To Discuss Human Trafficking

On Wednesday, March 20, 2013, B-3 held their monthly meeting at the Joseph Lee School at 155 Talbot Avenue Mattapan, MA 02124. This month's topic of discussion was human trafficking which included guest speaker Sergeant Detective Donna Gavin, a 30-year old veteran of the Boston Police Department and expert on human trafficking. She presented on the various reasons as to why people take part in human trafficking, the increase in this practice and resources available to help. 

"Usually when you think of human trafficking you think of abroad, but it is happening in our homes by our own kids by our own people. Most women doing human trafficking are at the end of the road. There is an increase because of the internet and the demand by men," Gavin states.
District B3 meets on the third Wednesday of every month at 6:00PM. The meetings give residents a chance to meet their police officers, talk about crime and other happenings in the community, and connect with neighbors and elected officials.

Mattahunt Community Center Receives Grant To Create College Readiness Program

The Mattahunt Wheelock Partnership Community Center will soon develop a college and career readiness program, thanks in part to a $15,000 grant provided by the Hamilton Charitable Company. The grant will be used to aid in the development of a comprehensive series of programs to support the Mattapan community and its young students. This will be a positive addition to the community in Mattapan.

Become an SCI AmeriCorps member!  Apply to join the team of SCI AmeriCorps members to build social capital in our communities through civic engagement opportunities.  They are currently accepting applications for positions that begin in Sept. 2013!  The host sites are located in Boston, Dorchester, Mattapan, Woburn, Lynn, Chinatown and Fall River.  SCI AmeriCorps members serve as either Volunteer Outreach Coordinators (VOC) or Youth Leadership Coordinators (YLC).
The mission of SCI Social Capital Inc. is to strengthen communities by connecting diverse individuals and organizations through civic engagement initiatives. We envision a nation where individuals are strongly connected to their neighbors and play an active role in shaping the destiny of their communities. This increase in 'social capital' will result in communities that are safer, healthier and more vital.

Greenovate Boston Award Nominations Deadline Friday, March 29, 2013!

Greenovate Boston's initiative is to make Boston one of the greenest cities on the planet. Mayor Menino has a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 25% by 2020 resulting in a greener and healthier city. United Sisters of Color’s Prom Dress & Tuxedo Donation Day on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at the Mattapan Square Library

United Sisters of Color is a human service organization of women who are committed to promoting social justice and providing services to youth, adults and families from underserved urban communities. Their goal is to establish positive relationships between Black and Latina women by providing outlets that are conducive to rebuilding bonds as well as giving back to the community.
United Sisters of Color is currently running aProm Dress & Tuxedo Drive for young people living in the Dorchester, Roxbury, Mattapan area who are in need of a dress or suit to wear to their prom and they cannot afford one. They have been collecting gently used gowns and suits since early February and we are holding another Donation Day on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at the Mattapan Square Library located at 1350 Blue Hill Avenue Mattapan, MA 02126.from 2:00PM-4:00PM.
